Large, mutually exclusive, spatial areas delineated on the basis of the purpose of accounting. Generally, EAU will reflect a landscape perspective. 22 Factors considered in their delineation include administrative boundaries, environmental management areas, socio-ecological systems and large scale natural features (e.g. river basins). A hierarchy of EAU may be established building from a landscape scale to larger sub-national and national boundaries. EAU at the landscape level may be considered to reflect ecosystem assets. EAU are the highest level of the spatial model used to define areas for the purposes of ecosystem accounting.
