The practice of carbon offsetting is a compensatory action that offers individuals, businesses, and other organizations the option to balance their carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits (carbon offsets) that fund projects focused at reducing emissions in developing countries. The principle of carbon offsetting is largely underpinned by the targets set in the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, linked with a decision to enable industrialized countries to meet part of their commitment to reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (or their GHG caps) by investing in greenhouse gas reduction in the developing world.
