NEPHELOMETRIC TURBIDITY UNIT (NTU).

The standard unit of measurement used to measure turbidity in water. Turbidity is the cloudiness of water caused by large numbers of individual particles. NTU uses a light scattering effect of fine suspended particles in a light beam. How much light reflects for a given amount of particulates is dependent upon properties of the particles like their shape, color, and reflectivity. The NTU has replaced the Jackson Turbidity Unit (JTU) as the standard of measurement.
