RIPARIAN BUFFER RULES

A series of rules that set additional limits on forest harvesting activities within the riparian buffer zone to protect water quality. The rules are often specific to designated river basins or watersheds.

RIPARIAN DOCTRINE

System for allocating water in the eastern United States, which gives owners of land along a stream or river an absolute prerequisite to a right to use water from that body of water.

RIPARIAN HABITAT

Areas adjacent to rivers and streams with a differing density, diversity, and productivity of plant and animal species relative to nearby uplands.

RIPARIAN RIGHTS

A concept of water law under which authorization to use water in a stream is based on ownership of the land adjacent to the stream. See alsoWater rights.

RIPARIAN ZONE

Pertaining to or located on the bank of a body of water, especially a stream.

RIPRAP

Layer of large stones, broken rock, or precast blocks placed on the upstream slope of an embankment dam, on a reservoir shore, or on the sides of a channel, as a protection against waves, ice, and scour.

RISK

The chance of something happening that will have an impact on objective. It is measured in terms of a combination of the probability of an event and its consequence.

RISK APPETITE

The level of risk a business is willing to accept in order to attain business objectives

RISK AREA

A segment of risk that is material enough to have its own risk drivers

RISK ASSESSMENT

A scientific evaluation of the probability of harm resulting from exposure to a hazardous substances. The contaminant exposure pathways examined are inhalation (breathing the contaminant), ingestion (drinking/eating contaminant), and dermal (skin having contact with contaminant).
