Some types of offset projects, however, cause GHG reductions by removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it in a reservoir (e.g., in trees or other organic materials, or in geologic formations). In these cases, there is a risk that CO2 may be re-emitted to the atmosphere, leading to a “reversal” of GHG reductions. A reversal occurs when the total amount of CO2 stored by a project becomes less than the total number of CRTs issued to the project.
