Conference held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro (also referred to as the Biodiversity Convention, the Climate Convention, and the Earth Summit). The conference adopted the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; an action plan termed Agenda 21; and the Non-Legally Binding Authoritative Statement of Principles for a Global Consensus on the Management, Conservation and Sustainable Development of All Types of Forests (Forest Principles) (United Nations, 1993). The conference also presented for signature by governments the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (United Nations, 1992a) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (United Nations Environment Program, 1992b).
